Jing Mian Xin Cheng on Beijing’s Fourth Ring Road mediates between the scale of large development and traffic arteries, with that of humans on foot. At Jing Mian Xin Cheng CLOU was engaged to make a new landscape as well as a development of two office towers with a retail podium in between.

Here much of the landscape creates a scale for humans while the facades give presence at a distance or at speed. Both change as the observer moves - large pleats on the retail podium cast dynamic shadows, while the towers’ curtain walls are modelled in three dimensions, creating reflections as well as shadows.

These projections also allow small, easy-to-operate openings to offer some natural ventilation, offering another dimension to the flow between inside and out.
